The process of commissioning a piece of furniture from me begins when you realize a need. This may be because you’ve discovered that an area of your home or office needs to expand its functionality by adding a specific type or piece of furniture, your taste in interior appointments is evolving, or perhaps you came across this site and you just can’t live without some of my work. Possibly it’s some combination of these. At any rate you realize that your particular aesthetic and practical needs can’t be met by going to a retail store or looking through a catalog and choosing between items manufactured by the thousands. You want something unique. By contacting me you have already shown an interest in the work I do. Thank you. Now we need to define your desires and discuss options. You know what you need, I know how to make it happen. You know what your requirements of function and size are and may have preferences of material, color, and general style. I have a vocabulary of techniques, skills and procedures that support my signature sense of design. Now we need to come to a set of conclusions that will serve both of our needs - your desires and my artistic goals. Remember, though your input is absolutely essential, I will need as much latitude as possible in our collaboration to assure the most original design and best possible outcome. After we talk, I’ll synthesize this information and make scale drawings and/or ink and gouache presentations that represent the work I would like to hand produce for you. There will be a design fee that I charge for this presentation, usually between $100.00 and $500.00, which varies with the complexity of the job. Payment of this fee compensates for my design time and represents to me your commitment to our project. If no further changes are needed, I can then give you a reasonable estimate of cost and time it will take to make delivery. If at that point you feel comfortable with the proposal, pleased with the design and satisfied with the price, we will sign an agreement that spells out the specifics of materials, size, design, timetable, and costs involved. Customarily I require a deposit of one third of the total cost of the work at the time of the order. One third is paid when the work is begun and the final third is due upon completion. Shipping is done by the most logical and economical means, whether motor freight or van line(freight collect), or I will deliver regionally at cost. If crating is required, a charge typically between $100.00 and $300.00 will be added. Of course I hope that this is a pleasant and satisfying experience for all involved as I want clients to be proud to display my work and to return to commission other pieces for their collection. This is the work I love and I feel certain that you too will enjoy it for generations to come. |
